In the early 1970's, a disturbing new phenomenon was reported in the United States -- a phenomenon that spread across rural America baffling ranchers as well as law officers. In August 2000 a team of italian physical scientists, working in collaboration with Norwegian colleagues from Østfold College, carried out an instrumental expedition in Hessdalen (Norway), which was just the first of a series of future scientific missions planned by the joint italian-norwegian EMBLA Project. The expedition was aimed at studying unexplained anomalous atmospheric luminous phenomena occurring in the Hessdalen valley since about 20 years, and it was particularly focussed to the study of the radio spectrum in the UHF, VLF and ELF wavelength ranges. The employed radio spectrum analyzers, which were automatically in function all the time for 25 days, permitted to discover highly anomalous periodic signals which were caracterized by a spike-like and a doppler-like morphology and which were mostly detected in the VLF radio range. Moreover, during the many planned skywatching sessions, it was possible to sight repeatedly luminous atmospheric phenomena of both plasma-like and structured types in varius points of the Hessdalen valley; some photographs were also taken and subsequently analyzed. This paper represents a preliminary report on this mission, in which both radio and visual phenomena are described. NIDS was contacted at 8:00 AM on the morning of February 21, 2002 regarding an “ice circle” that had mysteriously appeared on a ranch overnight. According to the report, at approx 7:00 AM on the morning of February 21, 2002 the circle—measuring 5 feet 9 inches in diameter—was discovered in an irrigation canal on a ranch in NE Utah. The local NIDS investigator, who is a retired deputy sheriff and an experienced tracker, was on the spot within less than an hour. The investigator immediately proceeded to take photographs (see Photos 2–5).

The ice was approximately 3/4 inch thick under the circle. The circle occurred near a spot where ranch cattle frequently drink water (see Photo 2 below). Some UFO reports document the presence of odors. While the number of UFO odor reports is small, odor detection and recognition provides some information that could help solve the UFO mystery. Odorants, if released or created by the UFO, could provide information about their chemistry and possibly about the energy generated to produce them. Odors have not been considered physical evidence of the UFO presence because odors do not leave a trace.
